Overview
Structural design of a long-span cantilever roof and bowl for a new multi-use stadium.
The challenge
The brief demanded a column-free spectator view under a 54-metre cantilever, in a region with meaningful seismic and snow-plus-wind combinations.
Our approach
We designed a radial steel truss roof tied back to a compression ring and a tension ring, with base isolation at the bowl to decouple seismic demand. Every primary member was checked against nonlinear time-history records.
The outcome
The roof was erected in nine ground-assembled segments and lifted in a single night operation. Peak roof accelerations under the design earthquake stayed within comfort limits.
