Overview
Civil and geotechnical engineering for a container terminal wharf and 14-hectare reclaimed yard.
The challenge
The reclamation fill would settle for years, threatening the crane rails, while the wharf face had to resist berthing loads from post-panamax vessels.
Our approach
We specified vacuum consolidation and prefabricated vertical drains to accelerate settlement, then founded the crane beams on driven piles decoupled from the settling fill. The quay wall used a combi-wall of tubular piles and sheet piles.
The outcome
Residual settlement was brought within 25 mm tolerance a full year early, and the terminal accepted its first vessel on the contracted date.
